Can I Be Frank?

Frankincense was one of the very first essential oils I purchased to help with my anxiety issues.  It was love at first scent. The more time I spent studying this incredible gift and it's therapeutic uses, the more I fell in love.

Frankincense is an aromatic resin obtained from trees of the genus Boswellia. It's a rugged tree that grows well in dry, rocky areas found in Oman, Somalia, Yemen and surrounding areas. In order to harvest, the bark is slashed with a knife, also known as"striping." This allows the sap or resin to ooze out.  Once the resin dries on the tree, it is scraped off and set to dry for four months or longer to harden completely.  The resin looks like irregularly shaped stones.  The lighter and larger the resin, the better the quality. The most pure resin is almost white and comes from a second striping or bleeding of the tree, but only under perfect conditions.  Silver and Hojari are considered the highest grade of resin. We typically see the resin that is a golden color.

The resin can be burned as incense (which is just heavenly). Many different churches use the resin as incense during ceremonies.  The resin can also be steam distilled to produce essential oils. Frankincense has a woody, warm, spicy scent with a soft almost citrus undertone.  The oil has a softer scent than the resin.

There are many species of Frankincense.  Boswellia carterii and Boswellia sacra are two of the most common resins and essential oils.

Boswellia carterii is wonderful with chest congestion, coughs and other respiratory issues. We use it in Frank & El's Nasal Inhaler to help open and support sinus health. It also has analgesic properties which makes it a great addition to Becky's Back Crack.  Boswellia carterii  has strong anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties making it a perfect part of the formula in Matt's Best Defense.

green-frankincense-zoomFrankincense has traditionally been used for spiritual growth and meditation. It is believed to have a centering effect on the emotions. It's sedating and calming to the mind, body and spirit. I have had the incredible opportunity of purchasing a Boswellia sacra (white).  It's like nothing I've ever smelled before.  It is warm, spicy and crisp with a very soft floral undertone.  So relaxing and incredible soothing. I keep it next to my bed to help me relax and combat insomnia.  It's my go to when making custom blends for clients who are looking for assistance and relief from stress, anxiety and to help with grounding.

We've recently infused Royal Hojari resin into Sweet Almond Oil in our Frankincense Resin Infused Oil.  It is a softer version of an essential oil and not as volatile.  Great as a skin moisturizer, but a must have for relaxation, when in prayer or meditating.  (I literally lather this on all day, so calming & relaxing).

Take some time to research this divine gift from nature. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like to just discuss the endless possibilities Frankincense has to offer.

As always, Be Well!
